The 2014 Chevy Malibu, coming to Cedar Rapids and Iowa City in the fall, is the first midsize sedan in the U.S. to offer fuel-saving start/stop technology as a standard feature.
The system, which automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, will be available in the base 2.4L engine 2014 Malibu.
Start/Stop Coming Standard for the 2014 Malibu
Start/stop technology saves fuel by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as at traffic light. When the driver takes their foot off the brake, the engine automatically restarts.
While waiting at a stop, a 12-volt battery powers electronic systems like heating, air conditioning, audio, and power windows.
While start/stop is an important fuel-saving feature, it is far from the only system making the 2014 Malibu more efficient. The car also has an Intake Valve Lift Control system, which monitors air intake to deliver maximum efficiency. The system not only benefits gas consumption, it is also expected to increase torque at low speeds.
According to Malibu Chief Engineer Todd Pawlik, the engineers at Chevy were able to use information gained from the eAssist technology to improve upon the Maibu’s fuel-economy. The knowledge gained helped the 2014 Malibu gain 3 mpg city over the previous year’s model, a rise of 14%.
With start/stop technology as a standard feature, the 2014 Chevy Malibu is going to be one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the road. See how the 2014 Chevy Malibu stacks up against the competition:
