You don’t need car repair experts to tell you that the long-term durability of a vehicle is important. Why buy something that won’t last? Fortunately, automakers and parts manufacturers are committed to ensuring that their products can stand the test of time, and they make sure of that by way of a series of tests. For every real situation to which your vehicle could be exposed, there’s a test to determine how it would hold up. But what are the particulars of some of these tests?

Durability Testing

The key to understanding durability testing is this: the tests are meant to find out just how long a vehicle can last, but in a much shorter amount of time than the vehicle’s expected road life. For instance, there are tests that involve driving the vehicle on a test track 24/7 for more than a month. The vehicle could be placed on a static dynamometer and be set to run at a high speed for months. This goes beyond the just the powertrain — for instance, a car door could be tested by being opened and closed repeatedly for a week or more.

The tests get more intense, too, as demonstrated by some of the trials conducted by Automotive Testing & Development Services, Inc. The company wanted to test whether a vehicle’s paint and fabrics could stand up to extreme temperatures, so they placed the car in the Arizona desert and surrounded it with mirrors. A fairly well-known test involves placing each wheel of a vehicle on a hydraulic pillar, which is linked to computer that makes the whole apparatus simulate a rough ride in various types of terrain.

Suffice to say that automotive testing is an interesting field. This is just a brief glimpse, but it should be apparent that automakers are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that their vehicles can stand up to real-world driving tests.
