GM, the maker of Chevrolet cars, trucks, and SUVs, has been recognized by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for environmentally-focused community involvement.

Seven of GM’s facilities, including assembly plants and engine and transmission factories, were given the Neighborhood Environmental Partner (NEP) award, which encourages and honors business and neighbors to work together on sustainability and conservation projects.

GM Maintains Environmental Leadership

The company is a leader in environmental efforts, as this is the seventh straight year that GM has received NEP awards. GM has the most NEP awards granted since the program began in 2005.

“GM is committed to reducing our facilities’ environmental impact while also improving the communities in which we operate.”

– David Talauskas, GM Director of Sustainability

Seven of GM’s facilities received the environmental honors:

  • Lansing Delta Township Assembly
  • Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly
  • Orion Assembly
  • Warren Transmission
  • Flint Assembly
  • Romulus Engine
  • Flint Metal Center

These sites have integrated GM’s efforts to reduce the global impact of its operations through energy efficiency, resource preservation, and waste reduction.

Irene Bashore of the Flint Assembly plant talks about GM’s environmental initiatives.

The seven sites all participated in GM GREEN, which monitors rivers and watersheds with local students, and celebrated Earth and Arbor Day with tree planting and habitat creation.

Four of the plants actually feature an on-site natural habitat that is certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council. Two plants are completely landfill-free by recycling and reusing all waste from daily operations.

General Motors has been setting the standard for environmentally-minded companies. The organization has more ENERGY STAR compliant facilities than any other group, and has been continually working towards its self-appointed environmental goals.

From a product stand-point, the Chevy Malibu is the first car in the U.S. to offer fuel-saving start-stop technology as a standard feature.

To be eligible for the awards, GM and its facilities are Clean Corporate Citizens and members of the Pollution Prevention Partnership.
