Chevrolet recently announced that its’ NASCAR racer will be based on the 2014 Chevy SS (Super Sport) which will be available to the public in early 2013.
The upcoming Chevrolet SS performance sedan will be the first rear wheel drive vehicle offered to US customers by Chevy in over 15 years. (Rear-wheel Chevy police cars have been patrolling our streets for years.) The new sedan will feature a V8 engine and is expected to provide a powerful addition to Chevrolet’s current lineup of cars, SUVs, and trucks.
NASCAR has been seeking a change from the previous “Car of Tomorrow” mold, which resulted in all the racecars, Dodge, Ford, or otherwise, looking almost exactly alike, making them hard to distinguish while on display, and impossible when racing at 300 miles per hour.
Chevrolet is the last manufacturer to release their model for the 2013 season, as Ford and Toyota have already introduced their stock racers. Dodge has pulled out of production for the 2013 season, leaving only three manufactures on the NASCAR tracks. This type of or decline from competition is not uncommon, as other brands have come and gone throughout the years, including Buick, Jaguar, Volkswagen, and even Studebaker.
Chevy SS to debut on NASCAR Tracks
Chevrolet really is the New York Yankees of NASCAR, so having a strong performance and distinct reputation on the track is important to the overall brand. As of the end of 2012, Chevrolet cars have been driven in 35 NASCAR championships. That’s over half of 2nd place Ford’s championships (15).
NASCAR also awards a Manufacturer’s Championship, based on cumulative results from all drivers. Chevrolet has won this award 34 out of 57 seasons. Historic drivers who won championships with a Chevrolet product include Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson.
