If you’re looking for used cars in Cedar Rapids, Pat McGrath Chevyland should be your destination, as our pre-owned inventory includes cars, trucks, and SUVs from an impressive variety of automakers. That said, we do much more than just sell excellent new or used vehicles, and we even do more than offer maintenance and repair — we’re happy to give you advice, too. So with that in mind, we turn to the question to which nobody wants to need an answer: how do you get into your vehicle without keys?
What to Do if You’re Locked Out
You don’t need to have purchased a used car in Cedar Rapids to have locked yourself out of your vehicle. While it ideally wouldn’t happen at all, it’s important to know what to do in this situation:
- If your vehicle has recessed door locks (that are withdrawn into the door handle), you’re going to need professional help — call a locksmith.
- If you’ve got an older car that features locks operated by a button on the window ledge, you can use a coat hanger to gain access to your vehicle. Straighten the hanger and bend the end into a hook, then carefully slide the hooked end between the window and the rubber molding — the goal is to hook the door button and pull it up. This can be attempted with other vehicles, but it’s unlikely to work.
- If you lock yourself out while you’ve got the trunk open, you might be able to move the rear seat out of the way to get inside. This, obviously, will depend on your vehicle.
If locking yourself out is a chronic problem, you might consider hiding an extra key on your vehicle using a magnetic key box — you’ll have to stick it to a metal surface (the vehicle’s frame, ideally), though you’ll obviously want it out of sight. This is ultimately risky, though, for obvious reasons.
